Turned on Wood
Are you an artist turning lumps of wood into beautiful, functional works of art? Have you wondered if your own website might help you sell more of your creations? I am a web designer who specializes in sites for woodworkers. I registered this doman because I thought it would be perfect for one of my customers.
I have seen sites featuring turned wood bowls made from teak, rosewood, cherry, walnut and many other exotic woods.
I remember from my high school shop class how one of the advanced student cut 3/4" squares of dark walnut heartwood and white ash, glued them together and created a wood turned lamp.
Shopping on Ebay I see many sellers of wood turned pens. You can buy the pen blanks in a multitude of colors, from a host of species. The biggest problem I see is there is a lot of competition and it would be hard to make much money. The one craftman I know who does will with wood pens also has a machine that allows him to engrave or wood burn a corporate logo onto the pens. He sells them to companies looking for corporate Christmas gifts.
A turned wood bowl is one thing, turned wood legs would be something else. For that you would need larger equipment and the proper size wood would be much more expensive. On the other hand, there must be a lot of antique oak tables with missing or damaged legs. I would think a business that replaced or repaird turned wood table legs in a variety of styles might be profitable.
We have several old walnut dressers we got from my late uncles' antique shop. Some idiot dip stripped them which, in addition to removing all the paint, loosened all the glue too. The original wood turned drawer pulls came loose and got lost during transit. We still have some of the pulls but have tried without success to match them. I would think a craftsman who could make duplicates of these original wood turned drawer pulls might find a market for them.
Turned wood bed posts would be an even larger change. We have a couple of old beds and turning a new wood bed post would take large equipment, skill, and a source for the wood. Turned wood supplies from a wood turning shop would also be necessary.
You can see a more complete demonstration of the kind of sites I build by visiting Woodwebs.com. I think abundant pictures of you, your work in progress, your raw material creates a personal connection with potential buyers. People buy from other individuals!
